3 Gross Motor Color Learning Activities

I found it really difficult to come up with fun gross motor color learning activities which included all the colors and were appropriate for the 1-4 year age range.
For a long time the best I could come up with was Twister (which we didn’t play) and rolling oranges in orange paint to paint a giant sheet of butcher paper (which we did do).
Then it dawned on me that instead of a small color sensory bin for fine motor practice, why not do a large color sensory pool for gross motor practice? This in turn lead to A life sized color wheel. 3 paddling pools with red, yellow, blue items gathered from around the house. In between each pool is a mixing bowl with balls to fill in for orange, green, and purple. All 3 children LOVED this and kept asking to play in it so I decided to leave it up a few days.

I saw this idea at Time for Play and I was really excited to try it!
Like marble painting but on a larger scale: line a paddling pool with paper, throw in some balls and paint. It takes multiple children (or one adult) to move the shake and tilt the pool enough to get the balls really rolling. I thought it was awesome.

But the kids were not impressed. LittleMan ran off to hunt worms without even touching it, Tink whined that she wanted to do “real painting with a brush,” and SunnyGirl climbed into the pit to chew on the paint covered balls. I ended up doing most of the painting myself. Still turned out pretty cool though! I had fun with it.

I really wanted to do an outdoor color hunt but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that our yard just doesn’t have enough color variation. No flowers or plants besides green grass, green bushes, etc.. so instead I brought our rainbow pool dive rings inside for a color hunt. We played until everyone won at least twice and the kids ran off alot of energy searching the house for items in each color.
