First Day of School (and a Dr Seuss Craft)

There were a couple aspects of LittleMan’s first day of Kindergarten last year which were so successful, we decided to do them again this year for his first day of first grade.

We dressed up in costume for a picture in front of our home again.
And we gave him a special school supply as a present. Last year it was a lap desk, this year we gave him a simple science kit to grow his own sea monkeys.

We did the typical everyday school subjects: reading, writing, math, geography, etc.. We also did a fun paper craft for fine motor practice.

Our paper craft was based on the illustrations in Dr Seuss’s “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” I supplied LittleMan with scissors, scrapbook paper, and tape.

I showed him how to cut the paper into strips and tape them to a tray, then I stepped back and let him have creative control.

And the end result was pretty cool.

To celebrate our first successful day back at school, we walked about 10 minutes down the road to the local zoo and purchased a membership for our family.

I have a feeling we will be sharing some zoo themed printable lessons in the coming months.
