Gross Motor Winter Wonderland Activities for Parties or Homeschool Gym Day
We are members of a couple different local homeschool groups. One of our groups meets monthly for “gym day” which is basically just a time when the children can run off some energy with their peers in a safe, enclosed area. Of course free play is encouraged on gym days but we also supply activities to entertain the children. Because gym days are a monthly event, we try to keep supplies and prep time to a minimum. This month was January so we planned a snow theme to our activities.
Activity #1: Indoor Snowball Fight
This activity was basically dodge-ball with rolled up white socks instead of nerf balls. Luckily I was in need of some fresh socks so we were able to kill two birds with one stone, new socks and a game for homeschool gym day.
Activity #2: Snowball Rolling
Everyone took a turn or two at this activity, even the moms. All that was needed was a straw and a cotton ball per player.
Activity #3: Snowball Toss
This activity called for ping pong balls but in lieu of those I borrowed some balls from my daughter’s ball pit. Otherwise it is a simple bucket toss game, and a fun opportunity for working on those early math skills calculating how many points they’ve earned.
Activity #4: Make a Snowman
A classic winter party game, one child holds still while another wraps them in toilet paper, a hat, and a scarf. Include a two minute timer and have the kids race against the clock or form teams of two and have them race against each other.
This is one of those super fun activities that always elicits giggles from children.
Big thank you to fellow homeschooling mom, Jen, for giving me permission to use pictures with her family in them.
Activity #5: Frosty Says
Just like Simon says, only do snowman-like activities. March around town, puff on a corncob pipe, try on an invisible magic hat.
Of course there is always the fun of the unplanned. Children have a tendency to take the supplies we give them and use them in unexpected ways. That is precisely what happened when the children decided to reuse the toilet paper from the Make a Snowman activity by ripping it up and tossing it into the air to create snow. This was great fun and they did it several times.
