Both LittleMan and SunnyGirl have birthdays this month so we’ve been incorporating their birthdays into our daily lessons and activities. Today we used birthday candles and some mud kitchen supplies to practice our math skills.
We used the candles as manipulatives for basic math problems: addition and subtraction.
I also asked LittleMan to divide the candles into 2 equal groups, 3 equal groups, 4 equal groups, etc.. using the typical fractions lingo of “half, third, fourth, etc..”
SunnyGirl practiced her patterning, which LittleMan helped with.
And LittleMan even got introduced to multiplication today. 1×2, 2×2, 3×2, 4×2, etc..
I really believe that having something hands-on helps the children grasp these concepts more concretely.
