Like many geek homes with small children, we have a few old, tattered graphic novels and comic books and such laying about.
LittleMan can manage a level 1 or level 2 early reader on his own, sometimes even level 3 depending on the publisher’s standards of easy readers (every publisher is different), however he can’t quite manage these graphic novels on his own. Really, he just enjoys the art work and having us read it aloud to him.
In an effort to strengthen LittleMan’s reading we practice with both sight words and phonetics. One way we make use of our tattered old graphic novels and comic books is sight word search and find practice.
For this activity all you need is a fairly worthless piece of reading material (this one has had half of its pages ripped out by the baby), and something to write with (a highlighter or different colored pen is best).
We laid our some of our sight word bees as reference, but simply writing out some sight words on a slip of paper would do just as well.
LittleMan went through the book, one dialogue bubble at a time, and circled any of the words he recognized without having to sound them out.
This is a fun, frugal, and easy way of getting in some sight word practice as well as making use of something as its on its way to the recycling bin.
Now on to this week’s On Beyond Zombie Linky Party!
We had some excellent posts shared last week, my favorite of which was a LEGO retelling of Three Billy Goats Gruff shared by Growing Book by Book. This was a really fun post that showcased the amazing ability to use LEGO bricks in endless ways. We love LEGO for all things creative and also for developing fine motor control.
Remember, if you link up with us this week then you might get featured next week! And even if you don’t get featured, the posts you share with be pinned and re-shared throughout our social media platforms.
