Little Leafers Lansing Area Nature Study Class by Caitlyn Stock
Little Leafers are Montessori-inspired, unschool-friendly nature study classes geared towards homeschoolers.
Dates and times are dependent on the specific class, but all classes are held on the trails of Fenner Nature Center*
(2020 E. Mt Hope Ave, Lansing, MI 48910).
For more information about the classes, contact Caitlyn Stock
(text 918-210-4214 or email suzyhomeschooler@hotmail.com).

Each class has three main parts:
Seed Time – Each class starts with a group discussion during which we plant the seeds for the day’s learning.
Branch Out – Students are given free rein to explore in an environment designed to encourage learning through play. Available activities during this time include but are not limited to 3 Montessori-inspired tray work stations, sensory bin, library books, nature journals, vocabulary ball, craft and/or science project. Those who do not wish to participate in the preplanned activities are encouraged to engage with nature via free play.
Leaf Pile – At the end of every class we regroup for brief discussion where the children are encouraged to talk about what they learned, what interested them, and what they still want to know more about.
Total class time: 1 hour.

Our classroom is the great outdoors.
Besides ample amounts of sticks and mud, students will also have access to magnifying glasses, measuring tapes, specimen jars, and a variety of other tools carefully selected to encourage learning through play.

Some weeks we will have live specimens available for gentle examination and observation.
If you have concerns about the possibility of live specimens, contact the instructor beforehand to discuss.

Little Leafers Classes

The only rule of Little Leafers is quite simple: show respect.
Respect for the environment we are exploring.
Respect for the animals who live in that environment.
Respect for our venue, Fenner Nature Center, making sure to follow their park rules.
Respect for the other participants who may have different values and/or beliefs than you do.
Respect for the instructor who has spent time and money to organize the class.
Most importantly, respect for yourself in that your conduct is in line with your personal values and beliefs.

A few guidelines to help ensure that your experiences are positive:
– Dress appropriately for the weather and the activities.
Wear things that you don’t mind getting muddy. Clothing that inhibits your ability to run or climb would not be ideal. Wear layers if you aren’t sure how hot or cold it might be.
– Use the toilet before leaving the house.
We’re going to be outside, we can’t guarantee that there will be a bathroom available.
– Arrive 10-15 minutes before class starts.
This is especially important if you are a first timer and still need to fill out a permission slip, or if you are a drop-in who needs to check-in and pay for the class.
– If you have signed up for a course, you should inform the instructor ASAP if you are going to be absent for a class.
This is merely common courtesy and allows the instructor to put aside materials for the student(s) to catch up at a later date.

Parents are required to stay on the premises for liability reasons, however parents of children age 5+ are not required to be actively involved in the class.
We appreciate when parents take the time to learn and explore with their children. Also, a few extra hands at the craft/science station is always nice. But you should feel free to bring a book to enjoy off to the side, or something similar, if you wish to do so.
Children under the age of 5 will need direct parent supervision throughout the class.

All Little Leafers Off-Shoot courses are 6 weeks long and each are $20 for the first student, $15 for each additional student.

Those who want to sign up for a full session (or half session, for summer) will receive a nature journal.
Between classes, students may take their nature journals home or leave them with the instructor. If students choose to take their nature journals home, they need to bring them back for the next class. At the end of the seasonal session, students may take their nature journals home to keep.
Students are encouraged but not required to make at least one page for their nature journal every week. Our goal with the nature journaling is not only to learn in the moment, but to also create something that will be useful for continued learning later on. We want this to be a positive experience which is why we encourage, but do not force, students to write and/or draw in their nature journals every week.

NO REFUNDS.

Families that are unable to afford the course cost should let the instructor know that they will be taking advantage of the financial hardships discount. Families experiencing financial hardships can enjoy the full class for a significantly reduced price. This discount is confidential and no other students will know who is using it.

In an anonymous survey of past Little Leafers families, Little Leafers was rated an average 4.25 out of 5 stars.

Little Leafers Autumn Nature Study

Little Leafers Nature Study is a year-round class, divided by season, created by Suzy Homeschooler.

You could be a parent with just one or two informal pupils, or you could be a co-op instructor with two dozen children under-foot. Either way, this is a flexible course that you can bend to fit your unique needs.

Little Leafers Nature Study Autumn Session

The autumn session is 6 weeks long. Each week has printable student packs with nature journal prompts, illustrated nature guides, fun facts, and vocabulary words. Little Leafers Autumn Nature Study Download Page

So you bought the Little Leafers Autumn Nature Study class and you were brought here.

This page is going to be an important place for you for these next 6 weeks, so be sure to bookmark it!

Every week you’re going to need to download two files: 1 weekly teacher’s guide and 1 weekly student pack.

The teacher’s guide has tips and tricks, a written lecture including discussion prompts, the weekly tray work cards, and a suggested craft. Week one teacher’s guide will be a bit longer than the other weeks as it will also walk you through the steps of finding your students, setting up your outdoor classroom, assembling your nature journals, etc..

The student pack is simply nature journal pages for the student’s nature journals.

The concept is pretty simple:
– download both files for each week
– print one copy of the teacher’s guide for yourself
– print one copy of the student pack for each student in your class

If you have any problems with the class, email me at suzyhomeschooler@hotmail.com and I’ll do my best to help.
