3 Mr Tickle Activities

When we lived in the UK, LittleMan got hooked on a popular British book series known as the Mr Men books. There’s Mr Happy, Mr Greedy, Mr Bump, Mr Bounce, Mr Tall, Mr Small and a whole slew of other Mr’s. LittleMan’s personal favorite is Mr Tickle.

Toy Story Theme Bath (and my thoughts on commercializing childhood)

Allow me to preface this post by saying, this was not my idea. I wish I could say it was but truly, the credit goes to my husband, Marmaduke, for having thought of this particular theme. It was a couple months ago when I was really sick and just didn’t have it in me to do night time routine with the kids. After having seen me put together so many theme baths, Marmaduke decided to try his hand at it. LittleMan loved it so much, we’ve re-created the theme twice since then.

I love this bath for two big reasons:
1- it offers old, lesser played-with toys in a new and interesting way, making them fun again
2- its a great way to get the kid to wash his own toys

If your child is a fan of the Toy Story trilogy as well as a collector of crap character toys, and has generous loved ones (like mine unfortunately is lucky enough to have) then you probably already have everything you need to create a similar themed bath in your own home. So without further ado…

Giant Abacus and Math Bath

This past autumn I came across this idea on I Can Teach My Child to use pool noodles for lacing and number sequencing practice. Unfortunately at the time pool noodles just were no where to be found, so I waited all these many months for pool noodles to be in season again, and in that time I’ve come across several other cool ideas (like a giant abacus from Growing Play and a math themed bath from Bath Activities for Kids) that I just couldn’t wait to try.
Well today I finally got my hands on some pool noodles, and this is what resulted:

5 Harold and the Purple Crayon Activities

Today I was planning to do a color themed bath for the kids. Simple, easy, fun. Just throw in some balls and balloons, maybe some legos all the same color. Add scented bath paint and colored water and you’re golden. But sometime around breakfast I went from deciding to do a blue themed bath, to doing a purple themed bath, to doing a Harold and the Purple Crayon themed bath. Once my mind got onto Harold and the Purple Crayon things just started happening. Next thing I know I had thrown together an entire Harold and the Purple Crayon themed day for the kids.

Shamrock Theme Bath

I know its not St Patrick’s Day yet but I keep seeing all these fantastic ideas on Pinterest and I just couldn’t wait any longer to have some fun with it!

I dyed the bath green and gave it a fun fruity scent by pouring a packet of lemon-lime Kool Aid into the filling tub, an idea I originally found on Bath Activities for Kids. I dipped our spray bottle into the bath to fill it with green water, then added a couple extra drops of food coloring to make it a darker green.

Lord of the Rings Small World Play

This morning I was eating my breakfast, browsing Pinterest, the usual routine, when I saw this brilliant idea for small world play from In Lieu of Preschool. She had set up a wonderful scene by painting her bathtub, then using random crafty items (playdough, pipecleaners, glass gems, etc..) to add details. The end result was FULLY. AWESOME.

Only one problem…her scene is based off the book Peter Rabbit. While a wonderful classic children’s story, not something LittleMan would be too terribly interested in. So I pondered. And pondered. And put my own geeky twist on it. Before I knew what I was doing, I was lamely trying to recreate a classic scene from Middle Earth in my own bath tub. The end result of my poor painting skills was laughable. Luckily I had props to supplement my lack of artistic ability. See for yourself. (more…)

Captain America vs Red Skull Theme Bath

About a week ago, LittleMan got himself all tied up in knots swearing up and down that he did NOT want to take a bath. Unusual since baths are one of his favorite things in the world. No one else in the family can run themselves a bath without LittleMan rushing into the bathroom, trying to jump in with them. However, for whatever reason, he just did NOT want to take a bath that day. But he needed it. Badly.

So whats a mom to do?

If you’re a geek mom like me, raising a little geekling, then you might find yourself setting up a scene like this:
